The Manor was the farm house dating back to the 1600’s for a 600 acre estate that stretched along the coastal plain either side of West Bexington. Where the countryside meets the sea.
It was converted to hotel in the 1950’s and has been operated as such, since. The Manor is currently under family ownership, who also manage the day to day operation. Having purchased the Manor 6 years ago it was in desperate need of some care an attention. The team set about refurbishing the hotel to that expected by the modern traveller, tempered by the constrains of an old building.
The plumbing system was completely replaced, so all showers work great and the central heating is very effective. We installed Vi-spung quality beds in all rooms and generally refurbished much of the fabric of the building. A new Garden room, adjoining the refurbished bar, was added in 2014, which replaced the worn out conservatory. A south facing Verandah was added in 2016, for Alfresco dining, outside weddings, and wedding ceremonies in a Marquee. Our gardens just get better each year, and respond to the care and attention provided by our gardener Graham.
A new commercial kitchen was part of the original refurbishment in 2011, and has allowed our food to go from strength to strength, under the skilful direction of our head chef. We constantly invest in the best Kitchen equipment to ensure our chefs have the right facilities to manage volume events. James our current head chef focuses on simple, fresh ingredients, with local fish and meat, together with his experience and skill to bring out the flavour. Some of our vegetables are supplied from our neighbours at Taramisk organic farm, our food is well received in the local community so diners are a mix of residents and non-residents in our bar/garden room and restaurant. Some days can get very busy, at which times we adopt a ‘booking’ only policy, so please book, to avoid disappointment.
The Manor plays host to numerous family events and weddings, from small and intimate, to large in an adjoining Marquee, many of these events make much use of our outside space. The Manor is available for exclusive events. All catering for events is done on site, by our own kitchen team. Daughter Jessica is an experienced wedding planner, having worked at large hotels prior to our adventure at the Manor. Jessica leads the front of house team and manages our events.
Our bar serves real ale from Otter brewery, together with San Miguel, Becksvier, Thatcher’s gold and Alderstones cider. Our bar and garden room operate as a Pub, and connect to the rest of building by an old stone, internal, half spiral stair case, or less challenging garden paths around the building. When the weather is good our beer garden is very popular and our south facing Verandah and patio provide a sheltered spot for alfresco dining, overlooking Lyme bay, great for lunch.
Protecting the environment is an important part of our ethos at the Manor, minimising our land fill by recycling all our waste glass, plastics, cardboard, and food. Our cardboard is compressed and baled, and our food waste is composted by the use of an on-site Ridan composter, with the resulting compost being applied to our flower gardens and developing vegetable patch.
